And there is no doubt on the first Option value “-1”, as we can clearly see from the Drop Down List Source HTML " data-medium-file="https://taditdash.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/dropdownlist-source-html.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://taditdash.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/dropdownlist-source-html.jpg? w=800" src="https://taditdash.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/dropdownlist-source-html.jpg? w=800&h=219" alt="Drop Down List Source HTML" width="800" height="219" class="size-full wp-image-295" srcset="https://taditdash.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/dropdownlist-source-html.jpg?Hopefully, this clears up the mystery around why Selected Item doesn't work as expected with ORM layers like NHibernate. This property indicates the zero-based index of the currently selected item in the combo box list.

The reason for this is that the Category Parent property holds an instance of a category object wrapped in a proxy (I use lazy initialization), and the Category List holds a set of instances of Category objects.

This post will go through the differences, and how they are used, and also do a little review on databinding in WPF.

To set this up, let's define Category objects and Product objects like this: Category--ID--Category Name--Products (An IList)Product--ID--Product Name--Category Parent (A Category Object)In the detail form for the Product, you want to have a Combo Box that has as its Items Source the list of Categories.

Setting a new index raises the Selected Index Changed event.

The problem is simple: By default WPF compares Selected Item to each item in the Items Source by reference, meaning that unless the Selected Item points to the same item in memory as the Items Source item, it will decide that the item doesn’t exist in the Items Source and so no item gets selected.
